Rock Creek Fishing Report – March 24, 2026

Streamflow: 813 cubic feet per second
Water Temp: 40-45°

This past weekend, our good fly tying and fishing friend Enzo went up to the Microburst and had himself a day!  Using an articulated stonefly nymph he tied himself, he caught a number of rainbow and brown trout.  The browns were especially active and are feeding well in this favorable spring weather we are seeing.  The photo album below shows the fruits of Enzo’s labors.  Stonefly nymphs are always a great option on Rock Creek, but they seem to be working particularly well right now, so I’d recommend them as your main nymph option for the foreseeable future.

One thing to keep in mind is water temps.  Ideally, you want it to get into the mid-40s before fish start becoming regularly active here.  This means sticking to afternoons and early evenings for the most productive times.  As we move into April, this window will open up into mornings, but for time being, I suggest coming out a little later.

Another issue will be Rock Creek’s streamflow.  800+ cubic feet per second is close to unwadeable for much of Rock Creek and is practically unheard of for the time of year (the average is 300 cfs).  The water will settle and drop with mild weather, but I suspect we will see a lot of mini-runoffs over the next couple months, spiked by either lots of rain or a streak of hot days.  So tread carefully when you’re fishing the creek, and when in doubt, don’t wade out.

If you would like to learn Enzo’s articulated streamer pattern described in this fishing report, come join us this Saturday at 11 AM for a Round Table fly tying session!  As always, the Round Table is completely free to attend, and we can supply tying tools and materials if needed.  We will continue fly tying sessions a little later than usual this year, running every Saturday morning through April, so we hope you will join us!  For more information, please call us (406-825-6440) or email at rcmerc@blackfoot.net
