Traffic has calmed down since the madness that is always the week of the 4th of July, and now that we are getting on into the month, we are starting to see the caddis and PMDs, our summer staples, take over. Look for these bugs throughout the day, but primarily in the mornings and late afternoons/evenings. When in doubt, the Purple Haze is still a great option (or you can try its crippled emerger equivalent!). Jake took another amazing picture of a brown caught on upper Rock Creek using a split-wing Purple Haze pattern:
With nymphing and streamers, there are a wide variety of flies to use. A lot of people love JJ Specials, but I’ve always preferred black buggers here on the Creek. The fish aren’t overly picky about the streamers here, fortunately. For nymphs, we have what we like to call the Holy Trinity of flies: the Prince Nymph, the Hare’s Ear, and the Pheasant Tail. We do have specialty nymphs, of course, but these three nymphs are always a great go-to throughout the summer season.Lastly, I wanted to share a picture of Nicholas, his adorable daughter Teagan, and a fish they caught last week. To me, this picture sums up what I love most about fly fishing; being outdoors, spending time with friends and family, and passing knowledge and a love of this sport to the next generation…and maybe catching some fish in the process!
