The Fly Tyer’s Roundtable

When my grandfather founded Rock Creek Fisherman’s Mercantile, he made it a point to have three things always free at his fly shop; a cup of coffee, a fly casting lesson and a fly tying lesson.

He considered teaching the arts of fly fishing as something too sacred to profit from.  I have kept this tradition going since taking over and wouldn’t have it any other way.

That is why I am happy to announce that we are bringing back our Fly Tyer’s Roundtable, a free fly tying session we are hosting Saturday mornings January through March.

The Roundtable starts at 11 AM and typically lasts about two hours.  The first hour is spent teaching a specific pattern, often one that is effective for Rock Creek and the surrounding rivers.

The second hour is more of an informal workshop; you can practice other patterns, demonstrate your own fly designs, or simply sit and listen to the talk around the table (there are always some great stories being told).

We also enjoy teaching beginners of all ages.  We can supply the tools and materials for lessons during the Roundtable sessions and help teach the fundamentals of the craft.

Already have your own tools and materials?  By all means, bring them with you!  We love discovering new patterns to tie and engaging with tyers of all different skill levels.

Throughout the winter, check out our social media pages for updates on the Roundtable, including the fly tie of the week and special guest tyers teaching their proven fly patterns.

I may be a bit biased, but I think this is the best place in the world to tie flies.  Come join us for some fly tying fun, Saturday mornings in the winter at Rock Creek Fisherman’s Mercantile!
